Mary’s Place:
A Lifeline for Ballina’s Vulnerable
Mary’s Place Engagement Hub is a vital part of Ballina’s social support network, providing a safe space for people experiencing homelessness or disadvantage. With the housing shortage and rental crisis driving increasing demand, Team Leader Brian Jamison highlights the hub’s mission:
“We offer a place for people to feel safe, share their stories, and access the help they need,” Brian explains.
The hub focuses on three pillars:
- Mental health support, offering connections to financial, legal, and medical services.
- Physical health, providing food, showers, and essential items.
- Community connection, helping people find employment, reconnect with family, and build support networks.
Every week, Mary’s Place serves 450 meals to over 300 visitors, offering hot breakfasts five days a week and support for everyday needs, from fixing phones to finding housing.
Support from Ballina RSL
Mary’s Place relies on community generosity, with Ballina RSL playing a key role. Grants from the RSL have funded significant improvements, including an outdoor covered area that offers patrons a place to gather out of the sun or rain.
Recently, another grant replaced ageing kitchen equipment with modern appliances, ensuring the hub’s breakfast and brunch program can run efficiently.
Simon, Catering Operations Supervisor at Ballina RSL, highlights the support of local suppliers like Daily’s Meats, Babelinos, and Big Food Lismore, who generously contribute to the hub’s meal program.
“The response from local businesses has been tremendous,” Simon shares.
