Through Out of the Shadows Walk
Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows Walk is a national event dedicated to supporting Australians in crisis and remembering those lost to suicide. On World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10th), Ballina RSL reaffirms its commitment to this cause by participating in the Walk and raising funds for Lifeline Northern Rivers, a crucial organisation in our community.
Last year, Ballina RSL staff joined the Walk in Casino, completing nine laps to honour the nine Australians who tragically lose their lives to suicide each day. The event saw over 60 participants, raising more than $3,700 for Northern Rivers. Nationwide, the Walk raised over $2,000,000, showcasing the power of collective action. This year, you can walk in Ballina as well as Casino, expanding the reach of this important initiative.
Michael Were, General Manager of Lifeline Northern NSW, emphasizes that suicide can affect anyone, regardless of background. “It is crucial that no one feels they have to face their struggles alone,” he said.
This September, Ballina RSL is raising funds for Lifeline Northern Rivers through charity tins placed throughout the club. Donations will directly support their help-line, especially vital in a region with one of the highest suicide rates in Australia. If you can’t visit the club, you can contribute by scanning the QR code provided.
With 6,226 Australians already committed to walking and $569,289 raised, this effort is more than just a walk—it’s a movement of connection, compassion, and hope. Together, we can raise awareness, provide support, and work towards a future where suicide is no longer a leading cause of death in our region. If you or someone you know needs help, reach out or call Lifeline’s 24-hour crisis support line at 13 11 14.
