Galaxy Jazz Band is an excellent band that performs regularly in the Northern Rivers of NSW area. The band plays many of the very best arrangements by the best big bands including Duke Ellington Orchestra, Count Basie Big Band, Glen Miller Big Band, Benny Goodman Big Band, etc. In the days when jazz was the most popular music, the Stan Chilcott Orchestra was the number one band in the Northern Rivers for many decades. In the 1970’s and 1980’s many of the original members formed the Northern Rivers Big Band. In 2003 some of the original members reformed the Northern Rivers Big Band and we have continued to build on that great tradition of powerful Swing, Latin, Jive, Blues, New Orleans and Ballads performed with true dedication to producing the original, wonderful ensemble sound. An afternoon spent foot-tapping or dancing along with the GJB is guaranteed to be a wonderful, enjoyable experience.
Musical director, Royden Ainsworth on alto sax and clarinet, shares with us his vast experience, having performed with top Australian and overseas artists at Chequers and Hilton Silver Spade. Royden’s first professional gig was playing alto saxophone with the Stan Chilcott Band at age 13 at the Riviera Ballroom in Lismore. Royden moved to Sydney at age 18 playing with many bands, including Tommy Tycho, Eric Jupp, Geoff Harvey on the ‘Midday Show’, Don Burrows and John Sangster. Royden was a studio musician on many recordings and has also played for theatre and opera productions.
Jazz-Blues Vocalist Laura Nobel played her first professional gig at age 15. After completing a Contemporary Music degree at Southern Cross University in Lismore, Laura moved to Sydney, performing jazz with pianists Mick Kenny and Paul McNamara and other bands. During her time in Lismore, Sydney and Melbourne, Laura also sang backing vocals on many albums, was vocalist with the Lismore Conservatorium Big Band. Her latest album ‘Since the Blues Caught My Eye’ includes her own compositions. Laura’s authentic, soul-stirring vocals provide a wonderful feeling that brings great enjoyment.
Trombone player Mike Keogh played with the Daly-Wilson Big Band plus many others. Electric bass and tuba player Bruce Worrall played with a wide range of top artists like Sherbet, Jesus Christ Superstar and Slim Dusty. The gjb is sounding better than ever with very talented players who work very hard at rehearsing this excellent big band, providing some of the latest big band sounds from around the world, and the time honoured big band sounds of the that great era. So please join us for an afternoon or evening filed with those amazing, enlivening sounds that only a real big band of 15 performers can provide.
